There are many ways to gather customer feedback in Productboard, including customer feedback and segmentation integrations, and importing feedback from a spreadsheet. Sometimes, though, it's easiest to submit feedback directly by hand.
This article covers the structure of a feedback item and how to create one manually. For more information on what to do with your feedback items, see Insights: Link user feedback to related feature ideas.

Creating feedback
Note: Admins, makers, and contributors can create feedback. Viewers cannot. See Member role definitions for details.
To manually create a feedback item:
- Open an insights board. Main menu > Library > Feedback is easiest, but any insights board will do.
-
Click the big blue Submit feedback button at the bottom of the board.
Note: If someone's mapped a custom feedback form to this button, you'll need to select Default feedback from the list to proceed. See Feedback form selection below for details.
- Give your feedback a short title that describes the source of the feedback (is it from an email? A meeting? With whom?).
- Identify the company and/or user whose feedback you're reporting. Source attribution is important for building a Customer Importance Score later, so try not to skip this.
- (Optional) Add tags if your workspace uses tags. See How do tags work in Productboard? for details.
- Write the feedback itself in the empty field below the metadata. You can include rich text, images, hyperlinks, headers, attachments, or none of that if you aren't feeling fancy.
- (Optional) If you won't be the one processing this feedback, and you know who will be doing that, make them the owner by clicking the Owner button in the bottom-left corner of the feedback item. See Owning entities in Productboard for details.
- Feedback items autosave, so you can simply click away or close the item when you're done.
Other metadata
There are a few other fields in a feedback item we didn't cover in the previous section. They aren't relevant to feedback creation, and may not be available depending on your workspace settings and Productboard plan, but here's some information if you're curious.
- Themes are user-defined categories that group feedback together based on filters. You can create themes from a template or from scratch, and once set, any feedback that matches a theme's filters will be added to that theme. See Categorize feedback at scale with themes for details.
- AI summary and AI Insights Populate with information once Productboard Spark has had a chance to analyze the contents. These features make it much easier to process the feedback into insights. See Insights: Link user feedback to related feature ideas for details.
- Links (as in completed insights) will appear here once the feedback item has any. See Insights: Link user feedback to related feature ideas for details.
Feedback form selection
Regular feedback items are relatively unstructured in terms of the feedback itself, which is why Productboard supports feedback forms. Such forms allow you define a structure that forces feedback submitters to provide exactly the sort of feedback you'd like.
All workspaces have access to forms, but they aren't set up by default, and only admins can set them up. If your workspace does have forms mapped to the insights board surface, you can choose to use a form instead of the raw feedback item to provide feedback.
See Collect feedback using standardized forms for details.
Providing good feedback
Here are a few best practices to help you provide useful feedback.
What happens next?
Once you've submitted feedback, the next step in the process is for someone (maybe you!) to create one or more insights from that feedback. Insights are connections between feedback and feature ideas, and they form the foundation of Productboard's suite of discovery tools.
