Using tags with feedback
Feedback tags serve as a flexible way of categorizing feedback, allowing you to filter for them later on any insights board.
Applying tags to feedback
- On any insights board, click on feedback to open its details sidebar.
- Near the top of the sidebar, beneath the feedback's title and customer data, click the + plus button beside Tags.
- A list of tags will appear. Use the search field at the top of the list to narrow down the list of tags to choose from, or to create a new tag if it doesn't already exist in the list.
- Clicking a tag from the list will apply it to the feedback.
Applying tags to multiple feedback items in bulk
Hover over feedback to reveal its checkbox, then click the checkbox to select it. You can select feedback one at a time or hold shift and click to select several at once. When you're happy with your selection, click the + Tag button to add tags to all selected feedback at once.
Filtering feedback by tag
At the top of any insights board, select Filtered by >
Tags. You can narrow down which tags appear in the list using the search bar at the top of the panel, then check the box beside each tag you want to include in the filter.
You can also change the filtering logic for tags. Choose one of the following options from the dropdown menu beneath the search bar:
- Any of the selected (default) - feedback must have at least one of your selected tags to appear on the board.
- All of the selected - feedback must have every selected tag to appear on the board.
- None of the selected - only feedback which doesn't have any of your selected tags will appear on the board.
Feedback tag examples
Here are a few popular ways to use tags with your feedback:
- [<product>] – tag by product or product area to help get the right feedback to the right people for processing.
- love ❤️ — save positive feedback and compliments from users that product managers and marketers can return to later when looking for customer references & testimonials
- performance 🛠 — track performance complaints to help PMs, architects, and engineers identify sluggish areas of the product
- pricing 💰 — identify areas of confusion; log feedback that indicates pricing is too high/low
- churn-alert 🚨 — track feedback from customers who are struggling with the product to help customer success plan interventions and inform product prioritization
- loss-analysis 🙈 — track feedback from prospects who decided not to become customers to inform prioritization and product marketing decisions
- [competitor-name] 🏆 — track users' comments on other products in your space to inform competitive research and product positioning
Especially in larger teams, tags can help you dissect your entire product offering into distinct product areas. Each product area can then be owned by a maker, who is in charge of processing related feedback as well as the subject matter expert of product-related questions from internal teams, customers, and roadmaps.
Using tags with features
Feature tags help you specialize your boards based on various criteria through filtering.
Applying tags to features from the sidebar
- Click on a feature to open its details sidebar.
- Scroll down to the Fields section, find Tags and click on the Not assigned dropdown. A list of tags will appear.
- (Optional} Use the search bar at the top of the menu to narrow down the list of visible tags.
- Clicking a tag from the list will apply it to the feature.
Adding tags to features from a data column
You can use the Tags column on any grid board to add tags without having to open each feature's details sidebar.
- Click + Add columns > Default fields.
- Click the toggle beside Tags. The Tags column will appear on your board.
- Click the dropdown in the Tags column to add a tag to that row's feature.
Filtering features by tag
You can filter your boards' features by their associated tags like so:
- Click Board controls near the top of the board.
- In the Filters section, click + Add filter.
- Select Features > Tags.
- (Optional} Use the search bar at the top of the menu to narrow down the list of visible tags.
- Click each tag that you want to include in the filter.
Managing your tags from the Data section
From the Main menu, click Settings > Tags. Here you'll see the list of all tags in your workspace, along with how many times they've been used and a search bar to help you find specific tags.
Note: All tags are shown in this list as entity-neutral. If a tag has been applied to one feedback, three features, and a component, this list will show it as having been used five times.
You can use the Create button in the top right corner to make new tags without assigning them to an entity. This is useful for setting up a database of tags to help others use Productboard (that is, to prevent people from making duplicate tags with slight variations in formatting).
Note: Productboard's tags are case insensitive. If you apply one tag that is identical to another tag (apart from capitalization), Productboard will adhere to the capitalization of the existing tag.
Editing, merging, and deleting tags
You can click on a tag to open its sidebar. Here, you can change its title or description, merge it with another tag, or delete it from your workspace.
Assigning tags to other item types
By default, tags can only be attached to feedback and features, but you can allow other item types to accept tags if you wish.
- In the Main menu, click Settings > Default fields.
- Click Tags.
- In the sidebar, under Assigned item types, toggle the slider beside each item type you want to enable tags for. If an item type's slider is not toggled on, no item of that type can receive tags.
How tags work with integrations
Tags behave differently with different integrations. See specific integration articles to learn how each deals with tags.
FAQ
If I tag feedback and link it to a feature, will the feedback's tags automatically apply to the linked feature?
No. Feedback and features are different entity types, so they do not share or inherit tags from each other.
Say I have a tag that has only been applied to feedback on insights boards. If I filter for that tag on a different board type, will I get a list of features that are linked to feedback with that tag?
No. Only insights boards have feedback as their primary entity, so other board types can't filter for feedback-based tags.
