Once the Jira integration is enabled, admins and makers can push features and subfeatures into Jira as new issues.

See Linking or unlinking Productboard features and subfeatures to existing issues in Jira for how to link Productboard features to existing Jira issues.

Pushing features from Productboard into Jira

There are two ways to push a feature from Productboard to Jira. You must be an admin or maker to use either, and your workspace must already be integrated with at least one Jira project.

From a feature's sidebar

You can push a feature to Jira from anywhere in Productboard like so:

  1. Click the feature to open its sidebar.
  2. On the Details tab, scroll down to the Integrations section.
  3. Hover over the Jira icon to the right of the Jira integration you wish to use and click the Push button that appears in its place.

From a column on a grid

You can add a column to any grid board to make pushing features to Jira easier:

  1. Click the Add columns button.
  2. Select Integrations from the sidebar.

  3. Click the toggle beside the Jira integration you wish to enable.
  4. Hover over the Jira icon in the row of the feature you wish to push and click the Push button that appears in its place.

The Jira integration column will display the current Jira status of any feature that's already been pushed. You can even click on that status to open the linked issue in Jira!

Configuring the pushed feature

When you click Push on a feature, the push menu will appear. Depending on your integration configuration, you might have to choose which Jira project to push to. Regardless, you'll have to choose the issue type this feature will adopt when pushed to Jira.

Tip: Features in Productboard are typically pushed to Jira as epics, but you might decide to push them as bugs, tasks, or even custom issue types depending on your organization's needs. Don't worry; you can always update an issue's type in Jira after pushing it from Productboard.

When you're ready, click Push to push. (Are you sick of the word push yet?)

Pushing subfeatures from Productboard into Jira

The workflow for pushing subfeatures is the same as for features, but the connection itself works a bit differently. Here are some important things to keep in mind about pushing subfeatures:

  • Subfeatures are typically pushed to Jira as stories, but they can also be pushed as bugs, tasks, subtasks, or other custom issue types.
  • You need to push subfeatures individually. For example, if you push a feature, its subfeatures won't be pushed automatically.
  • If you push a feature as an epic, and then push its subfeatures, those subfeatures will automatically be linked to the epic in Jira (assuming you push them as compatible issue types that respect the Jira hierarchy of epic > story/task/bug > sub-task).
  • If you would like to push subfeatures as sub-tasks, make sure the parent feature is pushed as a story or task (again, following the Jira hierarchy; sub-tasks can’t be children of epics).

FAQs

If I push a feature to Jira that includes an attached image or file, what happens to the attachment?

If you attach a file to an item in Productboard, that attachment won't be pushed along with the item into Jira. However, any images pasted into the item's description field will make it through and appear in the Jira issue's equivalent field.

Is it possible to push a Productboard component to an epic in Jira?

It is not possible to push components to Jira.

Components are useful for organizing feature ideas in Productboard (e.g. around user need, product area, or technical component) but do not represent ideas that are to be executed. We recommend using features for that.
