Milestones on timeline roadmaps

Milestones represent important dates which are relevant to the contents of a timeline. They provide context to viewers and help teams stay on track throughout a project.

Note: Only admins and makers have the ability to manipulate milestones. Milestones can be visualized and manipulated on timeline boards only.

Creating milestones

To create a new milestone on a timeline:

  1. Click directly on the timeline to open the Milestone menu.

  2. Type the name of your new milestone into the search box at the top of the menu and click Create.

Your new milestone will appear where you clicked the timeline.

When a milestone is created, two things happen:

  • It's added to the workspace-wide milestone database. This database is what you search through when typing into the Milestone menu. A milestone in the database can be assigned to any timeline, not just the one it was created on.
  • It's automatically assigned to the board from which you created it.

Assigning and unassigning milestones

Assigning a milestone to a board means making it visible on that specific board, and unassigning it means removing it from that board. You can have one milestone assigned to multiple boards.

A newly-created milestone will be automatically assigned to the board from which you created it, but if you want to add pre-existing milestones to a timeline, you must assign them yourself.

Note: You must save the board after assigning or unassigning a milestone if you want others to see the change.

To assign a milestone to a board:

  1. Click directly on the timeline to open the Milestone menu.
  2. Check the box beside a milestone to assign it to the board.

Tip: Use the search bar within the Milestone menu to easily find existing milestones.

To unassign a milestone:

  1. Click directly on the timeline to open the Milestone menu.
  2. Uncheck the box beside a milestone to unassign it from the board.

Note: The Milestone menu separates milestones into buckets based on each milestone's date relative to today (indicated by the blue line on the timeline). In the above images, BizCon 2025 appears in the Past milestones bucket because it took place in February, while CorpoCon 2025 is in the (unlabeled) Future milestones bucket because it's set for April. According to the blue line, it's currently mid-March.

Editing milestones

To edit a milestone, click the milestone itself on the timeline. The Milestone details menu will open, allowing you to change its name, description, timeframe, and color. Changes made this way are applied instantly—you don't need to save anything.

Deleting milestones

To delete a milestone:

  1. Open its Milestone details menu.
  2. Click Delete milestone.

Unlike unassigning a milestone, which removes it from a single board, deletion removes the milestone from the milestone database itself, potentially impacting other timelines in your workspace.

As deletion is instant and permanent, you will be asked to confirm before the deletion occurs.

Visualizing milestones

When a milestone is assigned to a board, it will appear as a colored diamond and label directly on the timeline.

Milestones which are close together may be truncated, or even grouped together. You can click on a milestone group to access the milestones within it.

FAQ

When I migrate a Legacy board to the New experience, will my milestones be preserved?

No. Legacy milestones are not available on New boards, and vice versa. Legacy milestones are board-specific, while New milestones are part of a workspace-wide database. Integrating these two systems would result in the database being potentially flooded by copies of the same Legacy milestones from different boards.
