New filtering engine coming September 10th, 2026

We're getting ready to release a new version of our filtering engine. The new engine is built for speed and clarity. It delivers more intuitive results, less friction, and better performance across your boards. It also comes with a handful of functional changes (covered below), so a few boards may need a quick tweak after this release.

We've also squashed a batch of edge-case bugs along the way, so your boards will feel more reliable everywhere, not just faster.

This article covers important before/after information about this upcoming release.

In this article:

When will the new filtering engine be released and what's changing?

The new filtering engine will be released on Wednesday, September 10th, 2026.

This release will include the following upgrades and changes:

  • Hide empty is now applicable to simple filters.
  • We've revised the logic for both simple and advanced filters. The rules are now more predictable.
  • Hide indirectly linked items also impacts non-grouped boards, providing more flexibility and consistency.
  • Grouping by multiple entities with different eligibilities also pulls in non-primary top-level items.
  • Filters on grouped boards affect non-primary top-level items and declutter board results.

Revised logic of simple and advanced filters

We aligned how simple and advanced filtering behaves. Both modes now:

  • Remove non-matching items and all items beneath them. Item types not targeted by the filter are still included.
  • Hide empty is available for simple filters. Previously this was only applicable to advanced filters.

As a result of these and other changes, the two separate filtering articles in this help center will be combined.

Legacy vs new filtering engine comparisons

The following sections provide direct before/after behavior comparisons of the legacy filtering engine against the new filtering engine.

Hiding indirectly linked items also impacts non-grouped boards

The Hide indirectly linked boards setting is now applicable to boards that don't group items.

Before (legacy filtering engine)

After (new filtering engine)

In the example below, the "Edit message" feature does not directly link to the "Now" release. Hide indirectly linked boards had no effect on that feature, so there was no way to remove it.

Hide indirectly linked boards removes child items that don't directly link to the grandparent entity. The "Edit message" feature is removed because it does not link to the "Now" release directly.

Grouping by multiple entities/fields with different eligibilities also pulls in non-primary top-level items

Some boards are grouped by multiple grouping types and their eligibilities may differ for each item type displayed on the board.

For example, consider a board which has initiatives and features as its item types, and which is grouped by both Release (which can be assigned to both initiatives and features) and by Initiative Status (which is specific to initiatives only).

In this example, features are top-level non-primary items, and when assigned to a group, they're no longer hidden; instead, they surface under the "Not assigned" group.

Before (legacy filtering engine) After (new filtering engine)

Top-level features assigned to a release are not shown at all.

Top-level features are shown, either under their initiatives (if sharing the same release) or under the "Not assigned" status group.

Filters on grouped boards affect non-primary top-level items

With the new filtering engine, non-primary top-level items in grouped boards now respect filters.

In the following sample data (from a board with initiatives and features grouped by release), the top-level feature Passive Activity Detection belongs to an initiative owned by David, while the top-level features Design new Strawberry Milk Chocolate package and Racing car:F1 belong to an initiative owned by Jan.

Say we then filter for items which belong to initiatives owned by David:

Here's how those three are affected by the two different filtering engines.

Before (legacy filtering engine) After (new filtering engine)

The features Design new Strawberry Milk Chocolate package and Racing car:F1 remain on the board despite belonging to an initiative which isn't owned by David.

The features Design new Strawberry Milk Chocolate package and Racing car:F1 are removed from the board because they belong to an initiative which isn't owned by David.
